Yo' Adrian Qualifies for Texas State Amateur

As the historic Texas State Amateur takes place June 24th-27th for the 101st playing of the event, competing will be one of our own. A couple of weeks ago Adrian qualified shooting a sparkling 71 at Memorial Park GC. He finished birdie, eagle, par. I love to see Khaki Cupper's play in big tourneys like that. It validates our competition.

Congrats Adrian and Good Luck.

Khaki Cup 2009

What the fuck just happened?

Final Teams are Set

Each year is seems inevitable we have a little competitor turnover. This year is no different. With increased demand we decided to increase each team by 2 players making each squad 14 players in total. That said, it is nice to note we have 26 veterans of the cup and just 2 rookies competing.

The Blue Team sheds one shiny personality in Brant Smith, but those shoes were quickly filled with an equally strong personality in Robert O'Neal, otherwise known as Eagle Eye. With the two extra positions Frank James and the Jewish Assassin Jason Feder were brought back aboard.

Surprisingly, last years victorious Khaki Team lost 3 very key ingredients: Clubbo, Greenie, and virtually unbeatable Eppinger. With those big holes to fill, Kent acting as the newly anointed "co-captain" recruited Californian Mike Kelso and brought proven veterans Brian Bieller, Sonny Whitehead, and Ramsay Ellis. John Shearer's efforts will bring Justin Day in to round out the Khaki Team.

So here are the final teams:

BLUE: Chris James, Ryan Gale, Jim Hurd, Brandon Brown, Adrian Villacorta, Matt McEneny, Jeff Schott, Jason Feder, Dai Phung, John Shearer, Scott McWhorter, Frank James, Robert O'Neal, Pat Schulte.

KHAKI: Kent Wiese, Rick Jendro, Justin Day, Mike Berry, Brian Bieller, Jim Hearn, Mike Kelso, Sonny Whitehead, Ramsay Ellis, Amadeo Arnal, Tom Warren, Gio Locandro, Steve Vierra, Joe Gillespie

Good Times at Cypress Point

Mike Green, Scott McWhorter, Jim Tallent and myself were playing at Cypress Point this past Saturday (lucky us). Weather was chamber of commerce beautiful, not a cloud in the sky, about 60 degrees with a light refreshing ocean breeze. We teed off on 10 and played the backside first as the weather brought out more than an average days play. We played our way around the course to #3 a 161 yard 3 par with a slight wind into us and off the left. The pin was back right, a tough spot to get to I thought. I asked our caddy, Bob, do you like the hard draw 9 or a smooth cut 8? "Smooth eight, Chris", I concurred. Nice rhythmical swing, slight fade, coming in high and nice, tracking, clanks the pin then disappears apparently on the fly. For a few seconds we had to think what just happened. Then we all realized short of any other explanation...it was in the hole. High fives ensued, a small celebration, but until we got to the green and saw the ball actually in the hole, we couldn't be 100% sure. The ball had ripped the hole up pretty good. It's a memory etched forever.

Hole 9, our last hole of the day, is a 290 yard drive-able 4 par with a narrow entry, a gaping deep bunker on the left, and drop off to death on the right. Scott hit a wonderful tee shot that just dribbled off the right fringe about 20-25' from the cup with a ticklish chip. Yep, you guessed it, clutch cargo holed it out for an eagle 2 to finish a rather surreal day. Scott was three under on the last 5 holes and shot even on that nine (better watch out Khaki Team).

I must admit on #16, the hole is so amazing, so storied, so beautiful, but mainly so visually intimidating that as I lined up my 19 degree rescue I was so freakin' nervous I was worried I may miss the ball entirely (I almost did).

Would I swap out a brand new jawbone in exchange for my ace on #3 at Cypress Point Golf Club.....hmmm.....trust me, I have my priorities in line, I'll keep my ace thanks.
Captain Chriznak.

Gentlemen: We have a change of plans.

Yesterday was an unusual day. Within the span of less than one hour, two of the hosts of the Khaki Cup (Joe and Johnny) called me and announced to me that their wives were pregnant and due around the time we had planned the cup. As a matter of fact Joe Gillespie’s wife Tammy is due the day before, what was planned as, round 1 of the Cup. Since my wife is due in June it really creates a tight situation. I was planning on launching this blog to let everyone know the details about this year’s competition at Bandon Dunes. Instead, I am announcing that we will be having a change of plans.

Our thought right now is to have a mid-October Khaki Cup right here in Austin, TX. And, why not? This is the 10th year anniversary of the Cup and it all began in Austin, so why not come full circle and play here again. Joe and I will be working on the logistics of the 2009 event and let you know as soon as possible. As for courses, we are thinking Wolfdancer in Bastrop and Barton Creek and its 3 courses ought to be a perfect option, but we will see.

This blog and our private Facebook group page will be the new forum for everything Khaki Cup you'd care or need to know about. We already have 16 members to our Facebook group, sign up if you care to be informed and entertained. No more chain multi CC'ed emails back and forth blowing up everyone's email inboxes.

And, in case you were wondering, we do plan on returning to Bandon Dunes in 2010 which will work out quite nicely as the new Old MacDonald course will be fully open for play.

Captain Chriznak.
